Charles Alvin Harman, 72, went to his heavenly home on Thursday after an extended battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He accepted his illness with grace and never complained about his affliction. His faith in God made him strong.
Charles was born to the late Clifford and Irma Harman in Tampa, Florida on August 5, 1942. He grew up in Homosassa, FL and graduated from Valdosta College in 1965. He entered the Navy as an officer during the Vietnam era and served 4 years from 1966 through 1970.
After leaving the service, Charles worked in the Farm Credit System including Production Credit Associations and Federal Land Banks for ten years before becoming active in agricultural finance and management as Vice President at Trust Company Bank, now Suntrust in 1982. He worked at Suntrust \
until 2000 when he could no longer perform his duties due to advancement of Parkinson’s Disease. During his time at Suntrust he was active in many agricultural related activities including Director of the Agricultural Economics Association of Georgia. He also was a member of Georgia Agribusiness Council, Georgia Cattlemen’s Association, Georgia Farm Bureau and Georgia Feed and Grain Association. He was also a member of the Georgia Bankers Association, Agricultural Committee Member.
Charles was in the Exchange Club of Macon, and volunteered with the other members every year at the Georgia State Fair. He also served as County Supervisor of the Ocmulgee River Soil & Water Conservation District for many years.
Charles was a long time member and Deacon at North Macon Presbyterian Church.
Charles is survived by his wife, Becky; his daughters, Regina (Gary) Humphrey, Kristina (Chuck) Mann, Carla (Tony) Cellini, Debbie (Carl) Fletcher; a son, Fred (Michele) Eichler; his grandchildren, Christian Mayer, Caroline Moore, Sara and Andrew Dillard, Emily and Carly Mann, Alyssa Cellini, Jeb & Seth Crummer, Trent Eicher, Carson and Carly Moore; his brothers, Carlis (Jeanne) Harman and Lloyd (Ester) Harman, and one great-grandchild, Hal Mayer. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, December 2 at 1:00 PM at North Macon Presbyterian Church with visitation from 12:00 PM until service time. Reverend Hunter Stevenson and Dr. David Todd will officiate. Private burial for family only in Riverside Cemetery.
