A a celebration of her life will occur Thursday, April 10, 2025 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Christ, 511 High Street, Macon, Georgia 31201.
Born in Massachusetts, Carolyn Elizabeth Evans always wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps in some fashion. The Rev. King Israel Evans was a pastor, and young Carolyn was raised Baptist from birth. Kleo Hodges Evans, her mother, welcomed Virginia (“Ginger” or “Ginny”) Anna Evans and George Samuel Evans in quick succession. The young family of five moved frequently, but remained tight-knit. They moved to Tignall, Georgia and then to Guyton, Georgia where Carolyn graduated high school in 1948.
Carolyn obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Bessie Tift College in 1952 and a Master of Religious Education from Carver School of Mission and Social Work in 1958. She then became a missionary in Louisiana. Eventually her mission work brought her to Macon, Georgia, where she met and married John Homer Jones, Sr. in 1966. Her new role as stepmom was soon supplemented: in 1970, the couple had a son. Carolyn returned to higher education once more, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Mercer University in 1982.
After coming to Macon, she maintained strong ties to her church family at First Baptist Church of Christ. In 1987, she was one of the first female deacons ordained at FBCX.
Carolyn claimed multiple careers, including schoolteacher, business owner, and writer. She is survived by her son, David Everett Jones, his wife Kathleen (Katy) Joelle Jones, and their son Donald (Donnie) Allen Griffis, and his wife, Harley Ashton Griffis. Extended family includes four step-children and their numerous children and grandchildren.
A painter, a poet, a sculptor, a pianist, a singer, a philosopher… Carolyn was always a life-long learner and was beloved by all who met her.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 9, 2025 at Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home & Crematory from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. There will be a private family burial on Thursday, April 10, 2025 at 1:00 p.m., followed by a service at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Christ in downtown Macon.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Affinis Hospice in Gray, Georgia.
