Carl L. Waller Jr. was born in Montgomery, AL, on April 9th, 1926 to the late Carl and Corinne Turner Waller.
Mr. Waller spent his youth in Montgomery, AL and graduated from Lanier High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II as a tank commander in General Patton’s 3rd Army. He saw action in the Battle of the Bulge and took part in the liberation of the German concentration camps. Mr. Waller was awarded two Battle Stars. Both before and after the war, he played professional baseball for several teams including the farm team for the Washington Senators.
Mr. Waller graduated with a BA from Huntingdon College in 1952 and was also married that year to the former Helen Broach of Macon. After graduation, he went to work in sales for Kellogg’s in Birmingham and Dothan, AL. In 1954 the couple moved to Macon where he subsequently joined MC Pittman Roofing & Paint Company. Mr. Waller retired in 1996 as president and owner of Pittman-Waller Roofing Company.
Mr. Waller was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church in Macon where he served as an Elder and was a member of the Somerville Sunday School Class. He was active in civic and charitable endeavors including the Civitan Club, Salvation Army, and Golden K Kiwanis Club where he served Meals on Wheels. He also coached little league baseball at VineIngle and was a guest presenter on World War II to elementary school students.
Mr. Waller had a special passion for the game of golf. He was a former member of Riverside Golf and Country Club, Idle Hour Country Club, Healy Point Country Club and the Georgia Senior Golfers Association. Mr. Waller attended every Masters for over 50 years.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen B. Waller, three sons and one daughter: Carl L. Waller, III (Susan) of Marietta, GA., Raymond B. Waller of Milledgeville GA., Helen W. Pursley (Gus) of Milledgeville GA., George T. Waller (Mary Beth) of Loganville GA., six grandchildren: Carrie W. Weatherford (Jason) of Roswell GA., Helen Marie P. Davenport (McKenzie) of Milledgeville GA., John A. Pursley, IV of Atlanta, GA. , Carl L. Waller, IV of Albany, GA., Eliza T. Pursley of Milledgeville GA., Molly C. Waller of Atlanta, GA., and one great granddaughter: Helen Anne Davenport of Milledgeville GA. He is also survived by a brother, Earl T. Waller of Birmingham AL, sisters-in-law, Mrs. Harold W. King of Athens GA., and Mrs. Raymond A. Broach of Macon, brother-in-law, Bill H. Broach (Barbara) of Lafayette CA., five nephews and eight nieces.
Mr. Waller touched the lives of many people throughout his life and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A funeral service for Mr. Waller will be held at Snow’s Memorial Chapel located at 746 Cherry Street Macon, GA on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Chip Miller officiating. Visitation will be held at Snow’s for one hour prior to the funeral service. A private burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Carl L. Waller Jr. to First Presbyterian Church, 682 Mulberry Street, Macon, GA, 31201, Hospice of Central Georgia (Pine Pointe), 6261 Peake Road, Macon Georgia, 31210, or to a charity of one’s choice.
