MACON – Bessie Hurst Mason, 90, died peacefully Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at her home after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street with private graveside service in Riverside Cemetery. The Rev. Ron Holland will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to service time on Saturday at the funeral home and from 5:00 to 7:30 PM Saturday at the home of Dawn and George Freelin, 7 Rabon Drive, Forsyth. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Vineville Baptist Church, 2591 Vineville Avenue, Macon 31204 or to the Alzheimer’s Association Central Georgia Chapter.
Mrs. Mason was born in Laurel, Mississippi. She graduated from Mississippi Women’s College and then worked for the Masonite Corporation for several years. She married Bill Mason (deceased) of Mississippi and had two daughters. Mrs. Mason had lived in Macon since 1956 where she raised her children and supported a small family business.
She was a longtime member of Vineville Baptist Church, a member of WMU and taught a children’s Sunday School Class for many years. Bess’s priorities throughout her life were her family, her faith and her church.
Mrs. Mason is survived by her daughters, Peggy Mason of Ringgold, Georgia and Dawn Freelin and her husband, George, of Forsyth, Georgia; grandchildren, George Freelin, III, Jayson Freelin and Mason Freelin; sister, Martha Ellen Parkhurst of Alexandria, Virginia.
The family wants to extend special thanks to all of the caregivers who gave Mrs. Mason such kind and patient care over the past few years.
