Barbara Peterson

(1933-2015)

Barbara Senft Peterson passed away Sunday, June 7, 2015. A Celebration of Life will be held at Ingleside Baptist Church on Wednesday, June 10th at 4:00 p.m. Burial services will be private for family only at Riverside Cemetery. Dr. Tim McCoy and Dr. Mark Hudgins will officiate. The family will greet friends at her home following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ingleside Baptist Church Building Fund, 834 Wimbish Road, Macon, GA 31204 or The Salvation Army, 1955 Broadway, Macon, GA 31210.

Born on October 14, 1933 in Macon, GA, she was the daughter of Sue Harris Senft and Henry Paul Senft. She graduated from Miller High School where she was editor of the yearbook. While earning a degree in early childhood education at Mercer University, she was an active member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and held several offices. She also met her husband, John Peterson while at Mercer, and they married in 1956. Upon graduation, Barbara worked for Delta Airlines and taught at Eugenia Hamilton elementary school. Family and church were Barbara’s lifelong priority. She was an active member of Ingleside Baptist Church for 58 years, where she served as a volunteer for Vacation Bible School, Awana, Nursery, Prayer Group, and Senior Ministry. Working in Mother’s Morning Out for many years, she was also a longtime member of the Kate Davis Sunday School Class. A major interest was the Suburban Garden Club in which she was active and held multiple offices during her 55+ year membership. Barbara had a very special focus on her volunteer work with The Salvation Army, serving as a board member, and the annual Angel Tree was her favorite activity and event. Additionally, she was involved as an active participant for many years with the Alpha Delta Pi alumni organization and The Mary Hammond Washington chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, John Beverly Peterson, Sr., and is survived by her children, Susan Louise Peterson of Atlanta; Nancy Peterson Thomas (Jim) of Greenville, South Carolina; John Beverly Peterson, Jr. (Jean) of Macon; and Julie Peterson Greene (Tucker) of Atlanta. Also, sister, Beverly Nash of St. Simons Island, GA and brother, Henry Paul Senft, Jr. of Haines City, FL. Barbara is also survived by six grandchildren who were the joy of her life: William Henry Thomas (Will), John Beverly Peterson, III (Jack), Elaina Lillie Peterson (Ellie), Louisa Elizabeth Greene (Lucy), Tucker Edward Greene, Jr. (Tuck) and Henry Robert Greene (Henry).
