Yolanda E. Weisensel, 86, of Machesney Park, passed away peacefully in the morning hours of Wednesday, April 17, 2024, surrounded by her family. Yolanda was born April 28, 1937, in Anderson, Indiana, to Kenneth R. and Ida Abney. On September 3, 1955, Yolanda married the love of her life, Stanley Weisensel, at Saint Mary’s Church of Rockford. She has missed her square dancing partner every day since his passing in 2017.
Yolanda had a very impressive work history, including secretary jobs, as well as owning and operating Command Post Restaurant and Camp Grant Museum, where she found true joy and pride. Aside from that, she was also a line dance and round dance caller, which never seemed like a true job since one of her main hobbies was square and line dancing with Stanley. She and Stanley were a part of the Forest City Squares for many years. She also loved to travel whenever she had the chance. If you named it, she wanted to go there. She loved to go antiquing in town or on vacation wherever she found a store. Throughout her life, Yolanda enjoyed baking with her grandchildren – especially cookies. Her love for history also gave her a special interest in genealogy and ancestry research. Yolanda even served as a Vice President for Greater Park Action Committee (GPAC).
Yolanda is survived by her children, Toni (Lory) Seagren, Mark Weisensel, Mary (former son-in-law, Donald) Cox, and Neil (Tina) Weisensel; grandchildren, Erin (Kevin) McCawley, Amy Weisensel, Clint (Brittany) Cox, Britteny Weisensel, Whittney Weisensel, and Nicholas Weisensel; great-grandchildren, Tori Oglesby, Logan McCawley, Keegan McCawley, Aiden McCawley, Cameron McCawley, Nolan Seagren, and Carlie Seagren; brother, David (LaNor “Punkie”) Abney; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded by her husband, Stanley; grandson, Lane Seagren; parents, Kenneth R. Sr., and Ida; brother, Kenneth R. “Butch” Abney Jr.; step-sister, Patricia “Pat”; daughter-in-law, Debbie McCutcheon.
A memorial gathering will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 9, 2024 at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Rd, Machesney Park, IL 61115. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family to distributed to organizations that meant the most to Yolanda.
