Sylvia Jean Eberle, 76, of Roscoe, IL passed away peacefully at home with her family on Friday, September 29, 2023 after her over 2 year battle with cancer (Cholangiocarcinoma). She was born on October 25, 1946 in Freeport, IL, the daughter of Harry and Hazel (Meinert) Pfile. Sylvia married Gareth Eberle on August 31, 1968 in Freeport, IL. Sylvia grew up in Freeport and attended Freeport High School. She graduated from Hesston College and went on to become a registered nurse at Kansas City General Hospital where she met Dr. Gareth Eberle when he was an Intern. They fell in love and were married in Freeport,. While Dr. Eberle (Gary) was in Vietnam, Sylvia worked as an RN at Freeport Memorial Hospital. During this time in Freeport, their first child, Grant, was born. In her husband’s second year in the Army, she volunteered at the well baby clinic at the Fort Huachuca Army Base in Sierra Vista, AZ. The family then moved to Portland, OR where her husband completed an Anesthesiology residency. This is also where their second child, Wendy, was born. A few years later, they moved to Rockford, IL where Sylvia became very active in the community.
She served as Vice President of the Rockford Woman’s Club from 1990-1992, President from 1992-1994, then Vice President again from 1996-2022, and on the Board of Managers from 2022-2023. Her love for the Club was undeniable, and she and her husband were often present at Club rentals, events and fundraisers.
She also was active in the state and county medical society alliances serving a term as President of the Winnebago County Medical Society Alliance and the Illinois State Auxiliary Alliance. She loved to read, participating in multiple book groups. She enjoyed flying with her husband to visit family and friends and attend anesthesia and Flying Physicians Association meetings. She especially loved traveling to visit their grandchildren.
Survivors left behind to cherish her memory include her husband, Gareth Allen Eberle; children, Grant (Emma) Eberle and Wendy (Gary) Humphries; grandchildren, Kale Humphries, Griffin Humphries, Graham Eberle, and Lena Eberle; and her brother, Norman (Karon) Pfile. and their three daughters. Predeceased by parents; Harry and Hazel Pfile.
Private family interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Loves Park, IL.
