Michael D. Wright, 64, of Venice FL, formerly of Rockford, IL, went to be with the Lord on October 25, 2021. He was born on December 9, 1956. Michael was a man determined to leave the world a better place than he found it. He was a social rights activist and a Rockford small business owner. Michael graduated from Guilford high school class of 1974, wherein his senior year, represented the gymnastics team at the state level. He worked for approximately 6 years at Sundstrand as a Technical Writer. On July 18, 1982 he and his partner, Daniel Ford, proclaimed their commitment to one another, and they shared 39 loving years together. The two of them purchased The Office Nightclub in 1991 they owned it together for 27 years. It was never “just a bar” for Michael and Daniel, they utilized the space to offer support to the LGBTQ community, to educate, and to lead with example advocating for the community. Michael was a founder of Diversity, and advocated for equal rights and marriage equality campaigns. He was an avid HIV and Aids educator and also donated to AIDS care. He worked tirelessly on fundraisers for Northern IL Hospice, Noah’s Ark, and many other charity organizations, directly benefitting the Rockford community. Michael was elected as the Licensed Beverage Association President, and took great pride in his work. He was always a sociable and respectful man. He loved his friends and his family deeply, and will be missed by many.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his husband, Dan Ford; sister, Pam Fetters; brother, Rob (Susan) Wright; nieces, Nicki (Mark) Murphy, and Brandi (Jay) Fetters, as well as numerous extended family members, and close friends whom he loved dearly.
He is welcomed into heaven by his parents, Margie Wright and William Wright.
Regrettably, no public services are scheduled at this time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A Celebration of Life to be scheduled at a later date. Interment is at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
