JoAnn E. Held was born on September 29, 1934 to Erwin & Margaret Hardt in a log cabin in Athens, Wisconsin. JoAnn met the love of her life, Elmer, at the Athens Assembly of God Church. They married on October 14, 1950. Elmer & JoAnn farmed the family homestead until 1966 when they move to Rockford, Illinois. JoAnn, along with her husband, Elmer, enjoyed working with the youth at the church where they attended – both in Athens & Rockford. JoAnn loved to invite folks into her home…missionaries, pastors, friends, family… She helped with the family plumbing business and worked part time jobs including Mr. Donut. She enjoyed being an Avon representative for many years. She attended City Church, formerly First Assembly. JoAnn spent the last five years of her life in a nursing home. The joy and peace that her faith gave her was so apparent while she was there. She never lost her joy. She was always at peace and content.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer, her parents and four siblings. She is survived by daughters: Joan Kolanowski of Rockford & Jane (Don) Pershing of Tulsa, son: Lonnie of Machesney Park, eight grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, and one sister, Sharon.
A visitation will be held on Friday, January 12, 2024 from 1pm until the time of the service at 2pm at Sunset Funeral Home (8800 N. Alpine Road, Machesney Park, IL 61115). Entombment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
