Gregory Charles Gray, 70, of Rockford passed away on Saturday October 22, 2022 with family by his side. Greg was born on July 28, 1952 in Omaha, NE, and lived his entire life in Rockford, IL; the son of Charles E. and Beverly (Kling) Gray. He graduated from Rockford East High School in 1970 and attended Rock Valley College and UW-Stevens Point. He married Kris Marshall on May 24, 1975. Greg was employed for 24 years at Anderson Brother Mfg. Company in Rockford (later known as APV Crepaco in Lake Mills, WI.). He then went to work for DeVlieg-Bullard for 2 years in Machesney Park. Greg became disabled in 2001 after Brain Tumor Surgery at the end of 2000, he beat all of the odds given to him until the end of June of 2021 when the brain tumor returned.
Greg was a boy scout as a school boy and member of Order of the Arrow. He became Scoutmaster for both the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in the 1990’s while his son was in school. He was a former member of the IceHogs Booster Club and Rock Valley Cat Club. Greg was an avid fan of the Rockford IceHogs, Chicago Blackhawks, Cubs, Bears and Bulls.
Greg is survived by his loving wife Kris; children: Sheryl Gray, Melissa (Mitchel) Thomas and Matthew (Kali) Gray; grandchildren: Jeremiah Thomas (Ashley Glover), Kallin Thomas, Meadow Thomas and Brennan Folts; brothers: Mike (Sandy) Gray, Randy (Donna) Gray and Kevin (Judi) Gray; mother-in-law: Colleen Marshall; sister-in-law: Nancy Marshall; brother-in-law: Walt (Susan) Marshall; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents, sister: Kristy Kurtz and father-in-law: Vernon Marshall.
The family would like to extend a special "thank you" to everyone at Serenity Hospice, especially Sheila and Jen.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the family to be used later in Greg’s honor.
Memorial service to celebrate Greg’s life will be 2:00 PM Saturday November 12, 2022 at Sunset Funeral Home 8800 N. Alpine Road in Machesney Park; visitation for Gregory will be from 1:00 PM until time of services at the funeral home. Family request casual dress, T-shirts and jeans or your favorite sports team jerseys, just like Greg wore. Cremation rites will be accorded.
