Carl “ Pete” Bergstrom, 95, of Rockford passed away on Friday January 6, 2012 at his home.
He was born September 4, 1916 in Cuba, Kansas the son of Arthur J and Elcena Bergstrom. Carl served his country in the United States Navy during World War II where he served as a motor machinist mate on the mine sweeper USS Implicit AM 246. He married Viola Golackson April 29, 1972. She preceded him in death November 22, 1995. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Ronald, Sylvester, Arthur and Edward Bergstrom and two sisters Bernice and Twila.
Carl is survived by six daughters; Carol Vermilye and Raye (Jack) Stone both of Rockford, IL, Ruby (Jerry) Zimmerman of Broken Arrow, OK., Ramona Bergstrom of El Cajon, CA, Judi Duhr of Rockford,lL and Reena Bergstrom, Springfield, IL; one son La Vern (Elaine) Golackson of Rockford,IL. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren; Mark,( Jennifer) Stone, Jamey Bergstrom, Kim (Brian) Gander, Ken Stone, Daniel (Patty) Low, Megan (Michael) Salmons, Wendi (Ryan) Lee, Anthony Bocskovits, Haley (Adam) Capponi and Angela Bocskovits; great grandchildren Hallie Stone, Ashton Stone, Holli Gander, Andrew Low, Abigail Stone, Jacob Low, Elijah Low, Bella Capponi and Maci Salmons; one brother LaVern Bergstrom, and two sisters Elaine West and Joyce (Harold) Dowell.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 on January 10, 2012 at Sunset Funeral Home in Machesney Park, IL.
Visitation will be held the night prior from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Monday January 9, 2012 at Sunset Funeral Home in Machesney Park. Burial will take place immediately following funeral services at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Machesney Park, IL.
Carl worked at Rockford Screw Products for 27 years and later he worked for Roto-Rooter from 1967 to 1981 before retirement. Carl was always willing to lend a hand to his neighbors and friends with anything they may need. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Rockford and he was also a member of the Robert Carlson VFW Post 1207 in Rockford. He will be missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church in Rockford.
