Michael passed away on April 30, 2022 after a lengthy illness. Known by many names, Michael James, Mike, Son, Brother, Daddy, Dad, Papa, Bo-weevil, Mr. Brown (for his brown UPS uniform) and friend. He answered to all with a smile.
He leaves a huge hole in the hearts of his family and friends who were always entertained by his stories and hilarious sense of humor. He was beloved by everyone who ever met him; a fantastic, father, grandfather, great grandfather, a great husband and a best friend to all walks of life. He never met a stranger, from the Walmart greeter, grocery store clerk, to the CEO executive. Everyone was greeted as if a life-long friend. No matter the circumstance, you'd always leave with a story of something funny/crazy Mike said while you were with him. His passion and integrity to those he loved was unwavering. His infectious smile and laugh will live on forever.
Mike was born on June 12, 1950 to Samuel Selby Jr. and Doris Tolerton Selby in Dallas, Texas. He attended W. W. Samuel High School in Dallas and drove for United Parcel Service (UPS) for 33 years. Having a very strong work ethic, he was finally able to retire and enjoy time with his family and much beloved animals. Dogs, cats and children could sense his sweet soul and naturally gravitated towards him. Mike married Laura Ruth Knox in December of 1975 and together the couple raised 5 children. Although we know we will all see him again one day, leaving his soulmate, was his greatest concern.
Mike is survived by his wife and best friend of 46 years, Laura; his baby sister, Tanya Selby; daughter and son in-law, Janice and Mark Childs; daughter and son in-law, Lindsay and Nathan Miller; sons, Daryl Selby, Alan Kote and Michael Kote. Granddaughters: Heather Phelps and partner, Quincy Wright, Katherine Kote, Jurney Selby, Sydni Selby and partner, Gabriel Ybarra, Samantha Carpenter, Jillian Childs; grandsons: Alex Kote, Nicholas Kote, Jessie Selby and Lucas Miller; His three great grandchildren, Michael Forns, Axel Wright and Alaura Ybarra; Mike is also survived by his very close cousin, James Selby; and several nieces and nephews.
Mike is now at peace, joining his parents, Samuel and Doris Selby; older sister, Carolyn Osteen; along with his Grandma Lillie, Nanny Tolerton, Uncle Max, Aunt Marie, Cousin Donna; and several others that meant so much to him. We can only imagine. Surrounded by the Lord's glory, we know they're all dancing and singing hallelujah today. We can take comfort in that, knowing that it's one fun and glorious party re-united at last! And, we too will someday join them. It's not goodbye, but see you later.
To our father,
We love you more than words could ever tell. A piece of our hearts will forever be missing. Your love was unconditional and your hugs could cure all. There will not be a day that goes by that we will not miss you. I'm not sure how to go through this life without you, but you taught us to never give up and to keep fighting, and this is exactly what we will do. We love you with all our hearts always and forever.
