Wayne was born on July 31st, 1952, in Dallas to parents Doris Mae Price and Leonard Harrison Bennett; Wayne was their first and only child. As a child, he found that he had a natural talent for playing drums and bringing joy to people through the gift of music. His interest in music would only grow as he got older and found more like-minded people he enjoyed playing with. By the time he was a teenager, he was already playing in clubs around the Dallas area, using his gift to bring people joy.
After graduating from high school, Wayne decided to pursue a career as a professional musician. In an effort to keep his life as adventurous as possible, Wayne never missed an opportunity to play with innumerable musicians all across the Dallas area . He made it his mission to meet as many fellow musicians as possible and to never say no to an opportunity to have a jam session. Wayne played with the likes of Tony Douglas, Ray Price, and Boxcar Willie, performing both nationally and internationally. His favorite place to tour was in England, “but not because of the food”, according to the man himself.
Despite his storied career in music and his passion for it, his true passion was his family. No family gathering was complete without his gregarious presence, infectious laughter, and his stories from his time growing up in the Dallas area and the many misadventures he and his bandmates found themselves in. Wayne’s true pride and joy was his son, Nathan, and he never missed an opportunity to tell everyone how Nathan was doing and how proud he was of him and the man he became. Wayne is survived by his son Nathan Bennett, his daughter-in-law Cassie Bennett, his nieces and nephews, and many friends he considered to be his family.
Services will be held at Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral home on Friday, March 24th at 11:00 A.M.
