Born on June 4, 1951, in Athens, Texas, Cathy was the daughter of I.L. (Dude) Powers and Catharine (Bebe) Powers. Cathy grew up in Eustace beginning on her parent’s farm before moving to “the pink house” off Highway 175 in Eustace, two doors down from her cousin Johnny Jones, whom she knew and loved her whole life. She loved horses and some of her happiest memories were on horseback with her childhood friends Pam and Elaine, who became her lifelong friends.
Cathy attended school in Eustace until the 6th grade when she transferred to Trinidad. She graduated in 1969 and looked forward to working the annual Homecoming reunion with her fellow Trojans and beloved friends, every year. She attended a bit of college and worked a short time at the phone company before settling on a career in cosmetology. She enjoyed making people feel good and look good and found a way to do both.
Cathy was an amazing friend. She was the first to offer help, bringing food to sick friends; dropping everything to visit someone in need; gathering donations to deliver to neighbors who had lost their home; offering a short-term or even a long-term place to stay for friends of friends that needed it no matter the reason; even volunteering to wait tables at a friend’s café and discovering that she very much enjoyed serving and meeting new people. She spent her life serving others and her community, including as a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Eustace where she taught children’s Sunday School for over 50 years.
Cathy was the epitome of a Southern Hostess as an excellent cook, she was always ready to celebrate an event or holiday, though Christmas was definitely her favorite. She loved entertaining a house full of people and her family always knew anyone would be welcome with or without notice. Cathy never met a stranger, at least not for long, and everyone was welcome at her table.
Cathy loved traveling to the East Coast and being on the water. From childhood summers spent with her cousins on her Uncle’s sailboat, to traveling to see her daughter’s family in Charleston, she always loved her time on the water and was most at peace there.
Cathy is survived by a large, loving family including her husband Max, daughters Courtney Christmas and Whitney Farley; sons-in-law, Drew Christmas and Chris Farley; grandchildren Sarah and Caitlin Christmas and Ruby and Lukas Farley; brother Chuck Powers and wife Kay, sister-in-law Mary Graves, brother-in-law Kenny Berry and wife Beverley; nephew Chris Powers, nieces Tami Dailey, Brandi Powers, Cayla Andrews, great nieces, great nephews, more cousins than she could count, and many great friends and neighbors.
Cathy loved her family, her friends and her community and though we all feel the void she left behind, we are comforted by the hope of reuniting in our permanent home in heaven.
A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at 2 pm at Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home in Mabank. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. Internment will follow the service at Payne Cemetery in Eustace, Texas.
