I met Mary over thirty-four years ago when I moved into my condo complex.  She was part of a welcoming committee of neighbors.  I bonded with her the most because of our Irish influenced childhoods on the east coast, and she made me feel at home as soon as I heard her New York accent.

Through the years, we shared many meals together with her grandson, Doug and daughter, Liz.   During Doug’s last year of high school, I mentored him through his senior project, and every Monday night Mary would prepare dinner for the three of us.  I looked forward to those home-made, healthy meals which were always delicious, particularly the salmon.  Mary was very health conscious with her eating habits and exercise.  At one point she had taken up Tai Chi, and she used her 10 pound weights frequently.  We both loved to walk and hiked all around Lynnwood and through its amazing parks.

Mary was always a great listener and offered old world wisdom passed down from generations.  I found her advice comforting especially during stressful times.  After 911, Mary and a group of her friends visited the Islamic Center to show solidarity when the muslim community was being attacked on multiple levels.  I loved Mary for doing this.  When Mary believed in something, she never backed down and was amazing in a fight.  She always, always came through.  When we needed signatures for our petition to prevent Sound Transit from bulldozing our complex, Mary got signatures from people at Gen Care where she was living.  She always found a way to participate and contribute.

We loved going to garden and home improvement shows at the convention centers.  One of my favorite Mary memories is attending Cirque du Soleil with her at Marymoor Park in Redmond.  

I last saw Mary about two months ago.  Although she had a hard time placing who I was, we connected like we always had, and she still had her sense of humor.  She looked peaceful and well-cared for.
