Losing him has been so hard. Grandpa was a titan, a figure so central and steadfast that he seemed like the ocean.  Always there, dependable, strong, convicted, faithful. His work ethic, intellect and love for his family was incredible, yet it would be easy to say his character was almost more defined by gentleness and empathy. He was a pillar in my life, during childhood, my formative years, as I was trying to make my way into adulthood and fatherhood. He always took great interest in my life, my career, my journey and imparted great wisdom to me that has shaped my past, present and will continue to help form my future. 

The love that he shared with his family created a household that will never be forgotten by all who are part of it. The outpouring of his love extended thoroughly through his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His home is and always was a place of great and indescribable joy and peace for me. I have more truly joyous memories of spending time there with him and those there he loved that it is beyond a simple nostalgia. It is a foundational element in my being, a place of bliss and love that he helped engender and create. 

Losing him is losing one of the greatest teachers I will ever have. A teacher of the art of selfless love, passion, joy, dedication to your family. Being convicted In your beliefs, not being afraid to call others to do what is right. His character and what it taught me will always be part of me, teaching me. Maybe that’s why it’s so hard to part. It’s as though I’ve lost part of myself.

But I know what he would say; what he would want. It’s not grief, sadness or idleness. He would encourage me to continue on, confident in me and certain of my character. Because I know he loved me greatly, it was evident in every word and action. And that is what I plan on doing, carrying on his memory by loving others the way he loved me. At least the best I know how.
