Cappy was born in Hopkinsville, KY on August 26, 1928, where she grew up and attended Sinking Fork High School. Her parents were Robert Herman and Ruby Thomas. On July 17, 1945, she married Douglas Pool, who would be her loving husband for the next 64 years. They had a daughter, Jane, in 1946. Two more children followed: Susan Hattie and Steven Douglas. Both passed away shortly after birth.
Cappy worked as a photographer at Martin’s Studio for 20 years, beginning in 1954. Her love of photography resulted in a treasure trove of family snapshots and portraits. She also had a beautiful voice and was the member of a singing group called “Candy and her Buddies” before her marriage. Cappy was a member of the congregation at Christian Heights United Methodist Church.
She lovingly raised her daughter Jane, and then her granddaughter, Heather. The greatest lesson she and Douglas taught them was graciousness and tolerance. They set a shining example of pure, unconditional love.
She loved animals of all kinds. The Pool home was always graced with a menagerie of dogs, cats, and fish. In later life, Cappy especially enjoyed bird watching. She was an avid gardener, an Andy Griffith Show aficionado, and Sudoku master. She collected sock monkeys and was beginning to learn the art of origami before her passing.
After losing Douglas in 2009, Cappy moved to Chicago to be close to her family. There, she beat breast cancer and adapted beautifully to her new “Urban Granny” lifestyle. In 2011, she moved to the Seattle, Washington area with her granddaughter and grandson-in-law. She had been living at the Chateau at Bothell Landing, where she very much enjoyed independent living, until the time of her death.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Don Bouterse of Hinsdale, IL, her eternally grateful granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Heather Mauldin and David Dague of Bellevue, WA, and her sister, Ida Stephens of Scottsdale, AZ; and many loving nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Douglas Pool; her brother, John Robert Thomas; her parents, Herman and Ruby; and her children Susan and Steven.
A memorial service is planned later this year in Hopkinsville, KY. Memorials may be made to the Christian County Humane Society or Christian Heights United Methodist Church.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Chateau at Bothell Landing for their important role in helping to make Cappy so happy during her time in Washington. We would also like to thank the amazing staff and volunteers at Evergreen Hospice Center for their loving kindness.
