Barbara Schrader Mulcahy went home to be with Jesus in the early hours of January 3, 2025 at the age of 91. She was sleeping peacefully and woke up in Heaven. Barb was born on October 1, 1933 in Des Moines, Iowa to William and Agnes Schrader. She grew up in Missouri most of her life and was the third daughter of the "3 B's”- Bette and Beverly and Barbara. Her childhood was full of music as her father was the high school band teacher and owned a music store, while her mother taught piano lessons. Barb was a majorette in high school with her specialty of twirling batons soaked in gasoline and lit on fire. she majored in music at the MacMurray College for Women in Jacksonville, Illinois. She was an excellent pianist and wrote beautiful songs.
In 1958, She met and married Jack Mulcahy. They met at a USO dance while Jack was in the Army. They decided to move to Seattle because Jack had been stationed at Fort Lewis and loved this beautiful part of the country. There they had 3 cherished children, Sarah Gunderson (David), Robert Mulcahy (Tina), and Susan Davelaar (Van). She also leaves behind 7 grandchildren, Kristina, Jonathan, Brooke, Brayden, Blaire, Jacob & Jamie. She had 3 great grandchildren as well, Wynter, Judah and Levi. Her sister, Beverly, still lives in Colorado and they wrote many letters back and forth over the years, signing on and off with, “Oh Bar!” and “Oh Bare!”
Barbara was a school teacher and gave piano lessons until Susie was born and then she became a stay at home mom. Her children's friends had a second home because of her. She always provided a fun, safe and loving place to hang out. After her children grew up and had families of their own, they all stayed nearby where she was the best Grandma, Nana and Mama they could have ever wished for. She went to all of their games, plays, concerts, and events. She was their biggest cheerleader. Barbara volunteered for Allied Arts, recruiting for the Orchestra and singing in the choir. At church, she lead a bible study and sang in the choir. She was active in the ministries of Aglow Fellowship, Coffee Cups, Burden Bearers and Hope Adoption. After her time with Burden Bearers, she went to work as a pre-need and at need memorial counselor at Floral Hills Cemetery. She retired in her mid 70’s to the golf course.
Barb’s favorite hobby was golf. She learned to play shortly after Jack when she discovered this would be a good time to spend together. They became members at Millcreek Country Club soon after it opened. After Jack passed away in 1987 she continued playing – often in women’s tournaments, as she was pretty competitive and loved the game.
Barb was able to stay at her home of 54 years while in the care of her loving children, Evergreen Hospice and trusted caregivers. She lived a life of gratitude and love. Her many worn out bibles are evidence of her deep connection with God and her desire to keep growing her faith. She prayed for her family and friends daily. She put her faith into practice through her kindness, love, and encouragement to all those around her.
