William J. “Bill” Madden, a life-long resident of Lynn, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 in the Grosvenor Park Nursing Home in Salem at the age of 88. Born in Lynn on January 12, 1930, he was the son of the late John F. and Charlotte (Whalen) Madden. Bill was raised and educated in Lynn and was a graduate of Lynn English High School with the Class of 1947. He went on to have a long career with the former A & P Markets in Lynn. Upon its closing in the early 1980’s, Bill was the manager of the meat department. He went on to work for McMadd’s until he finally retired.
Bill was a loving and devoted father who was a hard-working provider for his family. As a youth, he was offered an athletic scholarship to play baseball at B.C. but declined so he could support his parents and siblings. However, he never outgrew his love of sports. He was an avid sports fan and rooted on all the Boston teams. He always supported both his children and grandchildren in all of the sports and activities they took part in. He loved to cook for his family as well as playing card and word games. Bill liked game shows such as Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. He was quite handy man and adored listening to classical music.
In his later years, Bill enjoyed times spent with his friends as well. Thursday nights at the Four Winds was time for him, his brother Franny, his nephew, Richie and his wife, Val and friends to come together and reminisce. Bill valued all his relationships in life; family friends, animals, and co-workers alike. Bill was a proud man and will be remembered for being an excellent provider and always around when he was needed.
Bill leaves his children: Dolores Madden and her husband, William McCart of Oakland, CA, William J. Madden, Jr. and his wife, Susan Bloom of Swampscott, Corinne Madden of Gilford, NH, Roxanne Madden of Swampscott, and Pamela Ferrari and her husband, Richard of North Reading, his grandchildren: Craig Madden of Lynn, Carleen Madden of Nashua, NH, Richard Ferrari of Wilmington, Ashley Wheaton of Danvers and Jasmyn Starr of Gilford, NH, as well as 7 great-grandchildren, his brothers, Francis Madden of Lynn and Paul Madden, and several nieces and nephews. Bill also leaves his former spouse, Marilyn (Brennick) Madden. He was preceded in death by his son, Frank Madden, his brothers: the late John, James, Robert, Maurice, and George Madden as well as his long-time companion, the late Jeanne Tucker.
