Mr. William J. Curran, Jr., age 68, of Georgetown, died Sunday in the Anna Jacques Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was the beloved husband of Helen A. DeMontier-Curran, with whom he shared 47 years of marriage.
Born in Lynn, William was the son of the late William J. and Jane (Smith) Curran. A resident of Georgetown since 1975, William previously resided in Lynn for several years. He attended Lynn Schools and was a graduate of Lynn English High School Class of 1960. He later attended the Franklin Institute for Pre-Engineering in 1965, the Merrimack College Electrical Engineering Evening Program and the Massachusetts Radio School where he concentrated on Engineering and became a certified Basic Electronics Technician. He later taught low voltage wiring at the ITT Technical Institute.
An honorably discharged Veteran, William was a proud Marine and served as a Rifle Marksman during his enlistment, being discharged with the rank of Lance Corporal E-3.
William worked for New England Telephone Company and later AT&T until his retirement in 1989. During his 33 year career, William worked his way up from a lineman to second level manager. After his retirement, from 1990-2005, William and his wife Helen were the owners and operators of Curran Communication & Alarm Company in Georgetown.
William was the Past Grand Knight of the Georgetown Knights of Columbus Council #6064 and the President of the Georgetown Athletic Association. He also founded the first co-ed basketball team in Georgetown and coached little league and softball. An active communicant of St. Mary’s Parish in Georgetown, William taught Sunday School for many years.
William was a devoted father and family man with many abilities. He loved family and friends and taught his daughters many things. An avid sports fan, William also enjoyed fishing and boating, especially time spent in Lynn Harbor.
In addition to his wife, William leaves daughters, Lisa M. Curran-Crimp and her husband Kevin of Kennebunk, ME, Jennifer Curran and her partner Carolyn Thomas of Falmouth, ME and Nicole C. Phillips and her husband Stephen of Ashland, VA. He was the brother of Retired Meredith Police Chief John Curran of Meredith, NH, Retired NH State Police Trooper James Curran of Franklin, NH and Jane O’Neill of Port St. Lucie, FL. William was the Grandfather of Benjamin, Olivia, Grace and Daniel Phillips, Rosemary and Virginia Crimp and Meghan Curran. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.
William’s Funeral will be held from the CUFFE-MCGINN FUNERAL HOME, 157 Maple St. Lynn on Friday at 11:00AM followed by a Funeral Mass in Saint Pius V Church at 12:00PM. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Burial will follow in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery. Visiting Hours Thursday 2-4 & 6-8PM.
