Mr. Paul A. Harrington, 71, of Beverly, died Friday in Essex Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after a lengthy illness. He was the beloved husband of Kathleen L. (Chase) Harrington with whom he shared 28 years of marriage.
Paul was born on July 31,1939 under a Blue Moon in Salem, Massachusetts, son of the late Francis and Evelyn (Smith) Harrington. He was a graduate of Beverly High School Class of 1958, the General Electric Tool and Die Apprentice Program in 1964. Paul went onto Tufts University and received his degree in mechanical engineering. He also graduated from the GE management program in 1969.
Paul worked for the General Electric Company as an advanced manufacturing engineer for 35 years until his retirement in 1993. He was proud of his contribution on secret projects including the design of the stealth bomber. After his retirement, Paul returned to GE as a consultant.
Paul served in the Army Reserves with the 762nd Tank Battalion 94th infantry division and was activated in 1961 to the 50th armor division.
He was a member of the Union Club in Beverly, Bass Haven Yacht Club, the Beverly Salem Lodge of Elks, Valladolid Council # 70 Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post # 382 Navarre, FL, the GE Elfun Society. Paul was a 48 year member of Division 10 Ancient Order of Hibernians. He served as Secretary for 3 terms, Financial Secretary, Treasurer for 6 terms and Chairman of the Standing Committee for 30 years and was a Board of Director for the Building Corporation. He served the AOH on the Essex County level where he was elected President in 1982 and later was appointed the Historian. He also served AOH on the Massachusetts level and was elected Secretary for 4 years from 1996-2000. Paul served on the National level of the AOH. On July 9th, 2010 he was unanimously bestowed with Life Membership, the highest national honor given to someone who served on local, county, state and national levels by the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was also the former director and Vice President of the Lynn Unit Irish Northern Aide.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by 2 sons Francis P. Harrington and his wife Karen of Peabody and Michael Harrington and his wife Katherine of Bradford, 2 daughters Dolores Gardner and her husband David of Milton, FL and Tammy Harrington of Beverly, 1 sister Gloria Pobiedzinski and her husband Robert of Beverly, his sister and brother in law Sally A. and Walter A. Cuffe Jr. of Lynn. He was the beloved grandfather of 14 Brian Provencher, Paul, Matthew and Kelly Harrington, Andrew Turner, Shannon, Kerry and Patrick Harrington, Maryjane, David and Alexia Gardner, Brianna Arsenault, Caitlin and Christopher Harrington. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Paul’s funeral will be from the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St. Lynn, Tuesday at 10 AM. Funeral Mass in St. Pius V Church at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Monday 4-8 pm. Gifts in his memory may be made to the North Shore Medical Center Cancer Walk 81 Highland Avenue Salem, MA 01970. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Lynn.
