Born at home in the Brickyard section of Lynn on August 4, 1936, she was the 6th of 8 children of the late Bridget and John Calnan who emigrated from Ireland.
She is survived by two brothers Patrick B. Calnan and Edward T. Calnan both of Lynn. She is predeceased by five siblings John J. Calnan, James V. Calnan, William B. Calnan, Francis A. Calnan and Eileen A. Calnan. She also leaves a large number of nieces and nephews.
Peggy was a graduate of Salem Hospital School of Nursing and was the head nurse in the emergency room for many years. She was then recruited by Dr. John Ballou, a well-known surgeon in the North Shore area, to be his nurse.
Peggy lived in Swampscott and loved to walk and spend time at the beach. She was an avid tennis player, skier and a patron of the arts. She especially loved spending time with her nieces and nephews, introducing them to the theatre, museums and music. She loved to cook and entertain in her home, and family members have fond memories of many years of parties there. She was a giving person who volunteered her time and treasure with several non-profits, dedicated to helping people in need. She will be missed by all who knew her.
A Visitation for Peggy will be held on Friday, June 30th from 9AM to 10:45AM in the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home 157 Maple Street, Lynn, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, 8 South Common Street, Lynn at 11:30AM.In Peggy’s memory those who wish may make donations to St. Mary’s High School Development Fund, 35 Tremont Street, Lynn, MA 01902.
