Karen Marie (Dunlop) Slattery, 72, of Lynnfield, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of James E. Slattery Jr. with whom she shared 38 years of marriage. Karen was born in Lynn on November 26, 1951 to the late Robert and Mary (Carpenter) Dunlop.
She was a graduate of North Shore Community College in Nursing, her proudest academic achievement. Karen worked at Beverly Hospital for many years in Critical Care, Medical Day Care, and Endoscopy as a Charge Nurse and at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in the Endoscopy Center from which she retired. She was a past Secretary for the New England Gastroenterology Nurses Association. She was board certified in GI Nursing for many years as well as certified in Advanced Cardiac Lifesaving. She had great skill in her profession and compassion for all the hundreds of patients for which she cared throughout her career. Karen and her husband, Jim worked side by side every day of their shared career. She was a supporter to the American Heart Association and was involved in their annual drives.
Karen authored the children’s books “Pipers Diapers” and “Peapicker Marie Peelit”, which were stories about her granddaughters as young children. She was a great lover of children and advocate for children’s organizations. She was a prolific knitter; hundreds of babies were warmed by the blankets she gave to all the mothers she knew, and indeed those she did not know. She had a passion for stamp and coin collecting. She was a lover of animals and gave freely to organizations for abandoned animals.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Johnson and her husband Bob, and granddaughter, Kelsey, of Reading; her daughter, Christine Baker and her husband Jon and grandson, Coty of Byfield, granddaughter, Kassi, great granddaughter, Saylor, daughter, Kristen Davis and her husband Eric of Beverly, son, Justin Slattery and his wife Kelley of Danvers, grandson, Keagan and granddaughter, Piper of Beverly, great granddaughter, Ellie Moon of Beverly and grandchildren, Taylor and Zachary of Danvers. In addition, she leaves her sister, Jacqualyn Jane and brother, William, both of Rochester, NH, sister, Mary of Florida, sister, Debra, brothers, Neil and Scott of Lynn, brothers, Barry of Nevada and Jimmy of Florida, and many nieces, nephews and dear cousins. She was preceded in death by brothers, Michael and Robert W.
Visiting Hours will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024 from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm in the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple Street, Lynn. Her Funeral Service will begin at 12:00 pm. Per the family’s request, her burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association.
