Captain Joseph F. “GAR” Curran, Sr. Retired Lynn Fire Department, 94, of Windham, NH formerly of Lynn died suddenly Friday in Parkland Medical Center. He was the beloved husband of the late Ruth (Kane) Curran.
Joseph was born in Lynn, son of the late Frank J. and Abbie E. (Melanson) Curran. He was a resident of Lynn for most of his life until moving to Windham, NH where he had resided for the past 8 years. He was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School Class of 1935.
Joseph was a Captain for the Lynn Fire Department. He was appointed a Firefighter February 11, 1946 and served with Engine 6. On Nov. 21, 1960 he transferred to Engine 9 where he was stationed until 1962 when he transferred to Engine 4 and later Engine 7. On March 24, 1976 he was promoted to Captain and served on Engine 7 and was transferred to Engine 3 in 1976. Joseph retired in 1979 from Engine 6. He served the City of Lynn for 33 years. Before World War II Joseph, worked at the General Electric Company.
He was a World War II United States Army veteran, serving as First Sergeant of the 36th Armored Infantry Regiment Company B attached to the 3rd Armored Division. He was stationed in Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon Campaign Eastern European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge and a Bronze Medal.
He was a member of the Lynn Firefighters Relief Association. The Lynn Retirees Association, Retired State Association and Gannon Golf Course.
He is survived by 1 son Joseph F. Curran, Jr. and his wife Ann M. of Windham, NH; his loving grandchildren Ann Marie Goodwin and her husband Mark of Wilmington, Joseph Curran and his wife Laura of Windham, NH, Julie Davis of Haverhill and Kathleen Talbot and her husband Jeffrey of Londonderry, NH; his great grandchildren Katy, Dan, Tom and Zack Goodwin, Curran Davis, Marleigh Talbot, Meghan Curran and the late Matthew Joseph Curran. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Donald E. Curran.
Joseph’s Funeral will be from the CUFFE-McGINN FUNERAL HOME, 157 Maple Street, Lynn Monday at 9:00 AM. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Mary’s Church, Lynn at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Sunday 2-5 PM. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Lynn.
