Mr. John H. “Papa” Caughey, age 76, of Peabody formerly of Lynn, died Thursday night in Salem Hospital surrounded by his loving family following a lengthy illness. He was the beloved husband of Barbara (Teel) Caughey,
Born in East Boston, John was the son of the late Martin T. and Katherine (Benson) Caughey. He was raised in North Reading and was a graduate of Wilmington High School. He previously resided in North Reading, Newbury and lived in Lynn for the past 31 years before moving to Peabody in 2009.
Prior to his retirement, John worked as a Police Officer for the Towns of North Reading and Newbury. During that time, he also worked as a Security Guard for the GE and later worked as an Armored Car Driver for the Wells Fargo Company.
John was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 10. He was well known by his family for his cooking and many favorite recipes. He enjoyed fishing and hunting as well as camping in New Hampshire. He was an avid reader, very proud of his Irish Heritage, had a great sense of humor and loved his family and friends.
In addition to his wife, he leaves his children, Patricia A. Caughey of Amesbury, John B. Caughey of Barrington, NH, Daniel D. Caughey and his wife Denise of Salisbury, Christopher J. Caughey and his fiancé Amber Payne of Dover, NH, Deborah A. Bibeau and her husband Richard of Auburn, NH and Diane M. Grillo of Newbury. He was also the father-in-law of Victor C. Grillo of Newburyport. John was the Grandfather of Meghan and Ryan Cahill, Sean Bibeau, Jordan and Jared Grillo, Nicholas Caughey, David Caughey and Michael, Drew, Alex and Jesse McCallum. Brother of Sr. Katherine Martin, SND of Waltham, Bertha “Hunna” Aziz and her husband Ed of Haverhill, Margaret “Peggy” Peretti and her husband Frank of Peaks Island, ME, William Caughey and his wife Mary of East Orange, VT and the late Martin T. Caughey, Jr. Also survived by many nieces and nephews
John’s Funeral will be held from the CUFFE-MCGINN FUNERAL HOME, 157 Maple St. Lynn on Wednesday at 8:45AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Saint Maria Goretti Church, Lynnfield at 10:00AM.
