Born in Haverhill, he was the son of the late Irving W. Jones, Sr. and Pearl (Tuxbury) Jones. He was raised in Haverhill and South Boston and moved to Lynn upon his marriage in 1947.
Known by all as “Jonesy,” Mr. Jones served in World War II as a member of the United States Marine Corps and was particularly proud that he had been a member of the Corps at Iwo Jima.
Mr. Jones spent his career in the newspapers business. As a young man in the 1940s, he was a courier at The Boston Globe and The Boston Post. He later became a member of the Stereotyper’s Union and spent the rest of his career working as a stereotyper, first at The Salem News for over 20 years and later at The Boston Globe. He finished his career at the Globe in 1990 as a member of the Security Staff in the main lobby where he enjoyed welcoming visitors to the paper he loved.
Mr. Jones loved gardening, golf, eating out and watching the Boston sports teams. Even in his final illness, he avidly watched the Red Sox and could never understand why they “left that pitcher in so long.” Most of all, however, Mr. Jones loved his family, especially Marilyn, his wife of 64 years; his daughter, Beverly and his two grandsons, Coire and Chris who were the lights of his life. Nothing made Jonesy happier than having Coire and Chris at his side.
Mr. Jones was the father of the late Diane Jones whom he missed dearly. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, his daughter Beverly Benedetto and her husband Richard of Ipswich and his grandsons, Coire Jones of Somerville and Christopher Benedetto and his wife Celia Leopold of Rollinsford, NH.
Mr. Jones’ Funeral will be held from the CUFFE-MCGINN FUNERAL HOME, 157 Maple St. Lynn on Tuesday at 10:00AM followed by a Funeral Mass in Saint Pius V Church at 11:00AM. Relatives and friends invited. Interment Saint Joseph’s Cemetery. Visiting Hours Monday 4-6PM.
