Born in Swampscott on October 30, 1930, he was raised in Lynn and was the son of the late Harold and Dorothy Craven. Howard was the youngest of six children. He graduated from Lynn Classical, then attended Bentley College, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. Howard enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and proudly served his country. After Howard was honorably discharged in 1955, he met Phyllis, the love of his life. Howard and Phyllis were married on September 21, 1957, and were happily married for 66 years. They had six children, Stephen, Darryl, Daniel, Debra, Alan, and Nancy and 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Howard worked for Cushman’s bakery, Young Manufacturing, Ben's Tires, and Hoffman’s Dept. Store during his career. He and Phyllis retired in 1993 and moved to Pine Island, FL, then Lehigh Acres, FL. In 2016, they moved back to Beverly to be closer to family and friends.
Howard was always involved in his kids' lives. He was a coach for East Lynn Little League as well, the president of East Lynn Pop Warner for years. Howard was an avid runner. He entered and finished the Marine marathon, New York, and the Boston marathon twice.
Howard leaves his wife Phyllis, sons Stephen, Daniel and daughter in law Lisa, son Alan and daughter in law Diane, daughter Nancy and son in law Ryan and daughter in law Patty.
He was predeceased by his parents Harold and Dorothy, son Darryl, daughter Debra, and his five siblings.
Friends and family are invited to Howard’s Visitation on Saturday, January 6, 2024 from 2:00 to 6:00 PM at Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple Street, Lynn. A funeral service will follow at 6:00 PM.
