Mrs. Eugenie M. (Stickney) “Genie” McCarthy, 70, of Plymouth formerly of Peabody, died May 2, 2011 in Massachusetts General Hospital after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife to Joseph C. McCarthy, with whom she shared 46 years of marriage.
Genie was born in Peabody, daughter of the late Charles Stickney and Mabel (Reily) Stickney-Hudson. She was a resident of Peabody for most of her life before moving to Plymouth 3 years ago. She graduated from Peabody High School in 1957 and received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Salem State College in 1961. She then went on to receive her Master of Education from Salem State in 1966.
Genie was a beloved teacher in Peabody, where she taught 2nd grade for 41 years, first at the Wallace School and then at the Welch School. Genie was awarded Teacher of the Year while at the Welch. Genie was also a Sunday School teacher at Lake Shore Park United Methodist Church, where she was a long time active member.
Genie found most joy in her adored and adoring family. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her three daughters Laureen E. Quinn and her husband Anthony of Plymouth; Deirdre C. Gallagher and her husband Sean of Rockville, MD; and Heather M. Shea and her husband Michael of Trumbull, CT. Genie is also survived by her sister, Cynthia Horel, of San Diego, CA and her nine grandchildren Shannon, Liam and Patrick Quinn, Finian, Fiona and Declan Gallagher, Reily, Ryan and Aileen Shea. Additionally, Genie is survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was the sister of the late John Stickney.
Genie’s Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at the Lake Shore Park United Methodist Church at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
