A lifelong resident of Lynn, she was the daughter of the late Charles "Red" and Sadie (Kane) Hoffman. She was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Institute and St. Mary’s High School, Class of 1948. Eleanor began her career for the City of Lynn as a secretary at the Broad St. Fire Station. She also worked at the Western-Walnut Code Enforcement Program and the office of Mayor David Philips, the Lynn Community Development Department and the Lynn City Council Office.
She is survived by her daughter, Marcie Armstrong and her husband David, her son Eric C. Whyte, Jr. and his wife, Lisa, and eight of the greatest and much loved grandchildren; Jon, Sean, Brian, Thomas, Kerry, Eric James, Eric Thomas, and Jack. She treasured many vacations they shared and all the rollercoaster rides they dragged “coasternanny” on. She also leaves behind five great-grandchildren; Kyla, Dominic, Mackenna, Rowan, and Taytum. She was the sister to one brother, John Hoffman and his wife Jean, and had several very special nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her dearly loved daughter Julie A. Donaghy and her big brother, Charles (Red) Hoffman, Jr. and his wife, Virginia.
Ellie enjoyed being one of the “girls” of the “Eye Openers” Bowling League. Her other favorite pastime was playing the slots at whatever casino she happened to be near. She was mostly proud to be chosen as one of the few lady ushers at Saint Pius V Church. She and her husband loved long car trips, they would just load the car up, pick a general route, and with the aid of AAA tour books just take off and stop and see whatever they wanted at any point on the way. Her last trip took her as far west as Rapid City, South Dakota to Mount Rushmore and all the sights in that area. Her proudest trip was a cruise to Alaska, where on a stop at the Ketchikan, Alaska at the age of 81, she and her husband went zip lining.
Family and friends are invited to Ellie’s visitation on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple Street, Lynn. A Funeral Mass will follow on Wednesday, June 14, 2023 at 10:00 am at Saint Pius V Church, 215 Maple Street, Lynn. Please meet directly at church. Burial to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
