LYNN – Donald Francis Bessom, Sr., 69, of Peabody, formerly of Lynn, passed away on Tuesday, August 27th 2019. Born in West Lynn, Don was the beloved son of the late Frank S. Bessom, Jr. and Elizabeth S. (Clement) Bessom.
Don was the loving father of Donald F. Bessom, Jr. , Cassia Gilroy and her husband, Joseph, all of Salisbury and the late Michael Guerriero; dear brother of Robert Bessom and wife, Lucia of Venice, FL, Sr. Linda Bessom, SND of Somerville, Joanne Bessom of Middleton, John Bessom and Mary Bessom, both of Danvers; the former husband of Marilyn Bessom of Salisbury; and the uncle of several nieces and nephews.
His fists were forged as “Thunder and Lighting” and his bright smile shined alongside his Hibernian brethren in the close knit neighborhood of Veteran’s Village. He entered the ring as an amateaur boxer and developed a knack for counters. He served in the US Army stationed in Cam Ranh Bay during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1970 - receiving a bronze star for his courageous acts in the thick of battle. Don worked as a mail carrier in Peabody for the US Post Office for over 33 years prior to his retirement.
Don enjoyed bow hunting and fishing, especially in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. One of his favorite fishing spots was along the Pemigewasset River along the Kancamagus Highway. He was an avid Boston sports fan, especially of the Patriots. He made sure to never lose his accent or forget his roots as he journeyed out to California later in life. Luckily, Don was able to spend an enormous amount of quality time with his son, siblings, and extended family. He reached the heights of Yosemite in 2014 and most days relaxed to enjoy the hot summer sun while listening to the Rolling Stones. He was a talented sketch artist, crafting drawings of vast seas and formidable tall ships and large ornate wood carvings. He was also a member of the infamous Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division 10 in Lynn. Recently he enjoyed seeing his fellow classical rams at his 50th in Nahant, witnessing in person the greatest of all time, Tom Brady, beat the Chiefs 43-30, and going to one last Prep Football game to watch the Eagles soar. He was the kindest, gentlest soul you could have known and his quick wit, one liners, old tales would always have you rolling. There won’t be one quite like him for some time and his generous heart and rising laugh will never be forgotten. Rest now, you true King of the Mountain. You shall live on in our hearts and be at peace knowing that we shall meet once again.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, September 4th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St., Lynn, followed by a Funeral Service on Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
