Thomas James Carter Jr, 95, of Sylva, NC passed away on Sunday, February 7, 2016 at Macon Valley Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Franklin, NC . He was the loving husband of the late Jeanette Powell Carter.
Born on December 29, 1920 in Bryant, VA, he was the son of the late Thomas James Carter Sr. and Lucy Maria Ballard Carter.
Thomas was a retired truck driver with Falwell's Fast Freight and Consolidated Equipment Erectors. He was a gentle and humble man and a Southern gentleman. He always tried to see the good in everyone. He enjoyed living every day to its fullest. He was a mastered gardener and he fed many people. He was liked and loved by all and never met a stranger. He always made a positive impact on everyone. He loved hunting, fishing and sitting around and shooting the breeze. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends. He was a member of Southview Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by 9 sisters.
Thomas is survived by his children, Jeanette C Farmer and husband Leslie of Sylva, NC , Robert D Carter and Thomas J Carter III of Lynchburg, VA, Jean C Logwood and husband Morris and Marylin A Carter of Altavista, Va; stepsons Oscar Reksten and wife Suzanne of Orlando, FL and Howard Reksten and wife Diane of Patchogue, NY; four grandchildren, James Cromwell, Dalton Cromwell, Katelyn Hockett and husband Ryan and Shannon Butts and husband Kris; six step- grandchildren Adam Reksten, Meredith Reksten, Alexendria Reksten, Wyatt Reksten, Tom Reksten and wife Emily and Leslie Humble and husband Andy; one step-great granddaughter Lyder Reksten; one sister, Burnley C Harvey of Arrington, VA and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11am on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, with The Rev. Canon Mark Furlow, Rector officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service starting at 10am.
