Smith Andy Sheriff, Sr., 87, of Gladys, passed away Friday, January 23, 2015, at Avante’ Nursing Home with his children by his side. Born June 16, 1927, in Fairplace, SC, he was the son of the late Andrew Jackson Sheriff and the late Ella Smith Sheriff.
Smith graduated from Westminster High School and Long Creek Academy in South Carolina. He was veteran of the United States Navy during World War II serving abroad the USS Ranger. He was also a minister for 65 years pastoring churches in South Carolina, North Carolina and then in Virginia. Smith was also a member of the American Legion Post 16 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In addition to his parents, Smith was preceded in death by his brothers and sister, M.C. Sheriff, Clarence Sheriff, and Dorothy Cox.
Smith is survived by his children, Sandra Carr and her husband Jack of Winfall, Andy J. Sheriff, Jr. and his wife Kim of Lynchburg, Rebekah Farmer and her husband Gale of Lynchburg and Joy Stinnett and her husband David of Lynchburg; seven grandchildren, Tamera Perkins, Amy Phillips, Jackie Tyree, Angie Lacy, Tyler Farmer, Jeb Sheriff and Brandon Stinnett; nine great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services are private.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
