Shirley Wood Evans, 82, finished her earthly journey and reached her heavenly home on March 6, 2020. She is now rejoicing with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and her husband of 41 years, O.T. Evans and daughter Mari Leigh Baker Inglis.
She is survived by her daughter and husband Christy and Tim Hill of Lynchburg, Virginia, brother and wife Johnny and Patricia Wood of Jackson, North Carolina. She was a proud grandmama to three grandchildren, Justin, Emily, and Conner and great-grandmama to Bradley and Evie Leigh.
Besides her husband and daughter, she is also preceded in death by her mother and father, Sally Bunch Wood and Newton Carlton Wood, brothers Howard, Edward, and Bob Wood and sister Evelyn Wood Trotter.
Shirley spent most of her years in Raleigh, NC. She was a manager at Lifeway Christian Stores for over 30 years. She was a long time member of Friendship Baptist Church and a member of the Gideon’s International Raleigh East Camp. She spent her last years in Lynchburg, Virginia with her daughter and grandchildren. She loved to travel and had a spirit of adventure. She traveled to Europe, Canada and South Africa. She loved to read and sing and be with her family and many friends. She had a contagious smile and sweet spirit. Her love for her family was only overshadowed by her love for the Lord. She bravely spent her last days fighting dementia all while keeping her smile on her face and sharing kind words for everyone who encountered her.
A service celebrating her life will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 13, 2020 at the L. Harold Poole Funeral Home, Knightdale, North Carolina. Interment will follow in the Harris Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery in Youngsville, NC.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Lynchburg Virginia Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a ministry she lovingly volunteered with for many years and loved serving at Black Mountain Sports Camp, North Carolina.
