Ruth Smith Trent passed peacefully from this life Sunday, April 14, 2013. Born in Appomattox, VA on November 25, 1917, she was the daughter of Joseph W. and Annie Giles Smith. She was the widow of George Guilford Trent after sixty-seven years of marriage. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, five sisters, and a beloved grandson, Marcus C. Trent.
Mrs. Trent is survived by three sons, George E. (Johnny) Trent, Fairfax, VA; Joseph G. Trent and wife Martha, Evington, VA; Roger L. Trent and wife Debora, Monroe, VA; two sisters, Nora Tweedy, Rustburg, VA; Gladys Clements, Lynchburg, VA. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Joseph Trent Jr. and wife Wrenda, Evington, VA; Jeffrey Trent, Kinsdale, VA; Jamie Trent and wife Tammy, Evington, VA; Candace (Candy) Trent Mercer and husband T. J., Forest, VA; Amanda Trent, Richmond, VA; Shawn Trent and wife Barbara, Fairfax, VA; John E. (Jay) Trent and wife Melissa, Katy, TX; 8 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Ruth was a life-long member of Fairview Christian Church and was especially devoted to the Loyal Sons and Daughters Class. She was retired from General Electric after 32 years of service. She was loved and admired by all who knew her. Her life was filled with love, service to others, and much laughter. She enjoyed having her family around her and loved cooking for them. A skilled seamstress and talented craftsperson, she displayed her talents in her home and her clothing. She always had a joke or funny story for everyone.
The family wishes to express our gratitude to Dr. William A. Blackman and his staff and to Sherry Byers, R.N. and the staff of Valley View Retirement Community for all the love and care shown to her. We would also like to express their love and gratitude to an extra special niece, Linda May, for all of her years of love and dedication.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Fairview Christian Church with the Rev. Curtis Wheeler, the Rev. D. Jack Hamilton, and the Rev. Kristina May officiating. Interment will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
In lieu of flowers donations in her memory may be made to Fairview Christian Church.
