He was born on May 6, 1932 in Amherst County (Pleasant View) and was the son of the late Robert Homer Nuckols and Cecil Ora Whitten Nuckols and husband of 57 years to the late Iris Laverne St. John Nuckols. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Rufus Earl Nuckols, Robert Homer Nuckols, Jr., Clarence Walter Nuckles, and Marvin Edward Nuckols; four sisters, Myrtle Elizabeth Nuckols, Myra Ora Nuckols Hunt, Joanne Nuckols Davis, and Pearl Marie Nuckols Coles.
RB served in the Army at Fort Bliss, El Paso TX and then worked for Glamorgan/Griffin Pipe Foundry for 40 years. Even though he lived in Lynchburg for most of his life, 60+ years, he remained a “country boy” at heart. He loved to garden, mow grass, and rake leaves--anything that was like farming. He had a servant’s heart, happiest when helping and sharing a meal or a story with family and everyone he met was now family. He dearly loved his late niece, Patricia and she loved “uncle RB” just as much. Patricia’s sayings and quips made RB laugh every time. He liked to laugh with his “Hardees family” too. They met for breakfast almost every day for many years. He cherished those times of fellowship with Marshall, Wayne, Buzzy, Pete, Bill, and so many others. He was a humble man...without God, he was nothing. RB was a longtime member of Park View United Methodist Church and then Christ’s Community Fellowship United Methodist Church.
He is survived by one son, Robbie; three grandchildren, Robbie (Chelsey), Todd (Erica), and Cory (Michelle); four great-grandchildren, Noah, Adysen, Jackson, and Aubrie; numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind a very close, devoted, and dear friend, Lucilla.
Many thanks to all who provided care and comfort to RB. Thanks to Drs. Webb, Rennyson, Passman, Headley, Brady, and Jenkins; Centra Hospice’s Becky, Kathy, and Lauren; Gentle Shepherd Hospice’s Tammy, Gwen, Penny, and Breana. Special thanks to Lucilla and June for your care, love and support during RB’s many health challenges.
