Robert Odell (Bobby) Compton Sr., 84, of Lynchburg Virginia, walked through the gates of Heaven to be with the Lord and his wife “Betty” for eternity on July 3, 2019 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the loving husband of the late Betty Jean Cyrus Compton for 65 years.
Born on August 22, 1934 in Lynchburg Virginia, he was the son of the late Price Odell Compton Sr. and Rachel Genella Callahan Compton. He is survived by one sister Phyllis Jean Cyrus of Lynchburg and was also preceded in death by one brother Danny Lee Compton of Lynchburg.
Bobby retired from Randolph Macon Women’s College and he was a member of Beulah Baptist Church in Lynchburg, VA.
Bobby is survived by his daughters, Bonnie Jean Noell, and Linda Darnell Compton; and son, Robert Odell "Bebo" Compton, Jr.; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and a special brother-in-law, Eugene Childress, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and other family and church members.
Bobby grew up in “Cotton Hill”. In his earlier years, he loved walking to the City Stadium to watch the baseball games. His favorite pro baseball team was the New York Yankees. He also had a passion for Country Music. Bobby loved listening to Ernest Tubbs, Johnny Cash and the Grand Ole Opry. He also went to the Academy Theatre, Warner Theatre and the Paramount Theater on Main Street with the Love of his life “Betty” to watch all the country singers and western shows.
The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m., Sunday July 7, 2019, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday July 8, 2019 at Spring Hill Cemetery with Rev. Dennis Hollandsworth and Dr. J. Gordon Henry officiating.
