Our Heavenly Father saw fit to pick one of His angels, Phyllis (PeeWee) Cunningham Smith on Friday, June 14, 2013 at her residence. Her sunset, peacefully in the loving arms of her husband of 54 years, Alfred “Red” Smith, Sr. followed her courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Campbell County, May 4, 1943 she was a daughter of the late Harold Elbert Cunningham and Nettie Haythe Cunningham. Phyllis was retired from the Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority after 35 years of service having begun her career with the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office in 1972. She later worked part-time for Blue Ridge Regional until her health would no longer allow her to. She was also on the Board of the Central Virginia Crimestoppers. At an early age, she was a member of Organ Chapel Methodist Church and later transferred her membership to Crossroads Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two children, Alfred Smith, Jr. (Pam) of Lynchburg and Toni Smith of Rustburg; four grandchildren, Brandon Smith (Shameka), Trey Smith, Megan Smith and Antonia “Tea pot” Bell; three sisters, Lois Blair of Lynchburg, Sandra Smith of Washington, DC and Valerie Cunningham of Glen Allen; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Brown (John)
of Oxon Hill, MD and Cynthia Jackson (Sam) of Rustburg; two brothers-in-law, William Scott, Sr. and Malcolm Smith both of Rustburg; two devoted cousins, Josephine Waller of Hurt and Beatrice Simpson of Motley and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
A service celebrating her life will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at CrossRoads Baptist Church with the Rev. William Coleman as Eulogist. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times at the residence.
