He was the son of the late Archie Sturgill and Pearl Sturgill. Although he was born on August 8, 1947 in Konnarock, VA, at just six months old Paul moved with his family to Portsmouth, where he spent his formative years. He excelled academically and athletically, graduating from Craddock High School, where he was a skilled football player. His athletic talents earned him a prestigious football scholarship to Frederick College, which he attended until it's unfortunate closure in his junior year. Undeterred, he transferred to Lynchburg College, where he embraced a new challenge, receiving a wrestling scholarship and ultimately graduating with a bachelor's degree in education. Upon completing his studies, Paul began his teaching career at Otter River Elementary in Bedford County, sharing his passion for education with young minds. He later taught at John F. Kennedy High School in Nansemond County, now known as Suffolk, continuing to make a positive impact on the lives of his students. On June 4, 1971, Paul married his loving partner, Donna Pugh, forming a strong and enduring bond that lasted a lifetime. Together they had a beloved son that made a lasting mark on everyone he met. Aside from his dedication to education, Paul spent three summers working at the stadium concessions for the Tidewater Tides, a Triple A team affiliated with the New York Mets, showcasing his versatility and commitment. In pursuit of a fulfilling career, Paul joined Harry M. Stevens, Inc., a role that eventually evolved into Maryland Turf Caterers. He devoted his time and efforts to this profession until his well-earned retirement in 2009. After retiring, Paul and Donna relocated to Evington, where they cherished their time together and embraced the beauty of life. Throughout his journey, Paul remained an active and devoted member of Thomas Road Baptist Church, finding strength and solace in his faith and community. Paul will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His kind and loving spirit, his dedication to education and work, and his unwavering faith leave a lasting legacy that will be cherished for generations to come. In addition to his parents Paul was preceded in death by his only child Adam Brett Sturgill; his father-in-law Paul Gilbert Pugh, Sr.; and his brother John David Sturgill. Those left to cherish Paul’s memory include his loving wife Donna Sturgill; his mother-in-law Alta Pugh; Donna’s siblings Joan Shutt and her husband Terry, Mark Pugh and his wife Tracey, Kathy Plourde, Penny Dooley, and Paul G. Pugh Jr. and his wife Marlene. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held in the Pate Chapel at Thomas Road Baptist Church at 11:00 am Saturday, July 22, 2023, with a visitation an hour prior to the service where all who wish to pay their respects are welcome to attend.
