Paul Gorman, beloved father, grandfather, veteran and friend, was freed of his journey of suffering and found eternal peace on Wednesday, December 28, 2016.
Paul, a lifelong resident of Lynchburg, was born on April 18, 1939, the sixth child born to the late Judge Joseph V and Mary Jane Desmond Gorman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Joe Gorman, Jr., two sisters, Jane Gorman and Cecelia G. Kennedy and an infant granddaughter, Frances Gorman.
Paul graduated from Holy Cross School, attended UVa, received a BS from Lynchburg College in Mathematics and a Master of Engineering from George Washington University. He worked for Wiley and Wilson and later for Lynchburg College in the physical plant from which he retired in 2005. He served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Greenwich Bay and the USS Canberra. He was a lifelong member of Holy Cross Catholic Church where he began as an acolyte, bell ringer and was an usher for many years. He also served on the Cemetery Committee and the Church Council. He was a lifelong member of the Izaak Walton League, N.R.A., American Legion Post 16, where he served faithfully on the Honor Guard and he volunteered at Virginia Boys State for many years.
He is survived by two children, Michael P. Gorman (Tammy) and Michael’s godson, Kaegen, of Thibodaux, LA and Page Gorman of Lynchburg; two brothers, Bill Gorman (Janet) of Newport News and Jerry Gorman (Joyce) of Richmond and two sisters, Marguerite G. Miletic (Peter) of Hylton Head, S.C. and Henrietta “Cookie” G. Weidman of Purvis, MS and a granddaughter, Charlie Gorman, the light of his life, of Lynchburg. He is survived by his caregiver, former wife and forever friend, Ann Coffey Gorman.
Paul was a gentle man who lived his life quietly, never wanting attention even though he spent his time giving to his family, his church, his neighbors and to many charities. He was never too busy to stop what he was doing to help others. The world has lost a good man who will be greatly missed.
The family has very much appreciated the compassionate care of the Gentle Shepherd Hospice nurses and Marilyn Bailey.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church on Saturday, December 31, 2016 at 11:00 am with visitation at the church one hour prior. He will be buried at Holy Cross Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that one of Paul’s favorite charities be considered: Little Sisters of the Poor, St. Joseph’s Home, 1503 Michaels Rd., Henrico, VA 23229 or the Covenant House, 460 West 41st St., New York, N.Y. 10036.
