She was born in Altavista on August 22, 1937, daughter of the late Carlton M. Holland, Sr. and the late Elma S. Holland.
Mary was a retired teacher at Brookville Middle School. She was a faithful member of Thomas Road Baptist Church. She was a diehard North Carolina Tar Heel fan, where both she and her husband were ushers in the Dean Dome during their home basketball games. As mom and grandma, Mary never missed a child or grandchild’s sporting event or dance recital. She loved to sew and made most of her children’s clothes when they were growing up. Vacations were a time of great joy as she and the family loved going to the beach and spending summers at Smith Mountain Lake.
Mary is survived by two daughters, Dawn Martin and her husband Eddie of Rustburg and Leah Yackel and her husband Thomas of Concord, NC; eight grandchildren, Daniel James Martin and wife Destiny, Morgan Elizabeth Keene and husband Wesley, Matthew Terry Martin, Nathan Randall Martin, Mackenzie Hope Yackel, Noah Thomas Yackel, Anna Reese Yackel and Jessica Yackel and fiancé Spencer Cole. She is also survived by one great grandson, Noah Wesley Keene; one brother, Carlton Morgan Holland, Jr. and wife Jenny; one sister, Carolyn Booker and husband Buddy, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A service celebrating her life will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 17, 2022 in the Pate Chapel at Thomas Road Baptist Church, with Rev. Marvin Suitt officiating. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church.
