Martha Jane “Janie” Callahan Mason, 94, of Altavista passed away Thursday, October 26, 2017, at the Autumn Care Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late James William Mason. Born April 7, 1923, in Campbell County, she was the daughter of the late William Tarry Callahan and the late Matilda Jane (Pribble) Callahan.
Janie was a homemaker and a member of Salem United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband, Janie was preceded in death by two sons, Lester Mason and Charles Mason; four brothers, Allen Callahan, Carl Callahan, Clinton Callahan and Stratton Callahan; and five sisters, Frances C. Parker, Mazie C. Penicks, Ethel C. Callahan, Clara C. Callahan and Lucy C. Pribble.
Janie is survived by four children, Venida M. Shields (Frank) of Petersburg, Linda C. Crouch of Nags Head, NC, Valerie Mason of Harrisonburg and Stella M. Keesee (Donald) of Altavista; thirteen grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 29, 2017, at Salem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Schooler officiating. Interment will follow at Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Following the service, friends and family are welcome to fellowship at the residence of Donald and Stella Keesee.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Salem United Methodist Church.
