She was born in Newark, New Jersey, on August 24, 1923, the second child of Eugene
Willard Garges and Lucy Alys Waring Garges. She was graduated from high school in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, did post graduate study at Pembroke Academy in Franklinville, New York, and was a graduate of Penn State University. She was married to the late Edwin L. White of Doylestown, PA and Bradenton, FL.
Marguerite was a strong-spirited woman from a long line of remarkable women, interested in all things family, in history, in reading and filling her home with books. She was a lover of the companionship of cats! She had a thing for clocks but not for being on time. She appreciated good food and was a collector of cookbooks, sharing them with anyone willing to cook for her. Having raised five children, she took a degree in Psychology and embarked on a second career which included social work in hospital settings in Pennsylvania and as a social worker for Manatee County public services for the elderly in Bradenton, Florida. She had to be persuaded by family to retire from full-time employment at age 84, yet she never admitted to being elderly herself even though she did not mind telling her age. In recent years Marguerite suffered the isolation that comes with profound deafness but she was ever-gracious and friendly, with a ready smile for everyone. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg.
Marguerite is predeceased by her husband Edwin L. White, brother Eugene W. Garges, Jr. of Long Island, NY, sister Rosalind Garges Watlington of Bermuda; she is survived by her brother William Jeffery Garges of Toms River, NJ, her sons Lynn Lee Pixley and wife Luise Körber Pixley of Bishopville, MD, David Bruce Pixley and wife Janice Dunn Pixley, of Sevierville, TN, daughter L. Pixley “Pix” Mahler and husband H. Richard Mahler of Lynchburg, VA, her sons James Mark Goldie of Euless, TX, Peter Andrew Goldie and wife Sarah Szczechowicz Goldie of San Francisco, CA. Marguerite has nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
The Service of Resurrection will be a family graveside service at Doylestown Cemetery in Doylestown, PA.
