Born in Lynchburg on July 5, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Ivey Lee Layne and Mary Evelyn Thoms Layne.
Loretta graduated from Madison College and embarked on a dedicated teaching career with Amherst County schools. She later earned her Master's degree from UVA, enriching her teaching practice. Loretta retired after 30 years of service, leaving a lasting impact on her students and colleagues.
Beyond her professional achievements, Loretta was known for her love of hats. She had an extensive collection and was affectionately referred to as the "hat lady" by her friends. Another passion of hers was watching UVA basketball, always donning her UVA hat in support of her favorite team.
Loretta is survived by her daughter, Sharon Hatcher Winfree; three grandchildren, Wesley Winfree, Elizabeth Ballard, and Edward Winfree; her brother, Jimmy Layne; and her sister, Gloria Ragland. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 19, 2024, at Fort Hill Memorial Park, with the Rev. David Hill officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association, a cause that was important to Loretta.
