Larry graduated as the Senior Class President from Hardin Reynolds Memorial School in Critz, VA, in 1968. He furthered his education at John Tyler Community College before transferring to Virginia Tech, where he made the Dean's list several times before his graduation in 1975. He remained a fervent supporter and alumni president of the local chapter for over two decades.
Larry proudly served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Barney, contributing significantly during his tenure. He carried the values of dedication and commitment throughout his life. He ultimately decided to make a career out of real estate and was a revered figure in the real estate sector. He had a successful 30 year career, establishing himself as a respected realtor and business owner and built many long-lasting relationships.
A true lover of music, Larry had an enduring affection for oldies and classic rock, actively supporting local bands and musicians, which brought him much joy. He loved playing drums, and was known to share the stage with some of his favorite local musician friends. His enthusiasm for sports was evident throughout his life, in his participation in baseball, basketball, volleyball, and water skiing. Larry was also known for his unwavering support of the VA Tech Hokies.
Larry is survived by his three children, Angel Wood (Alex) of Long Island, VA, Christi Godfrey (Robie) of Lynchburg, VA, and Duke Grant of Lynchburg, VA; his brothers, Harry Wayne (Madelyn) Grant of Rustburg, VA, and Walter Grant (Phyllis) of Gastonia, NC. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Skyler Anderson (Tyler), Jake Kersey, Mikey Rhodes Grant (Brooke), Alexis Robertson, and great-grandchildren, Isaiah Kersey (Zay), Savannah Anderson, Olivia Anderson, and Caiden Anderson. Larry also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a broad circle of friends, including close companions Jerry Doss and Bob Hansen who supported him throughout his illness.
Preceding him in death were his parents, William A. and Olive E. Grant; his brother, Chester Bud Grant; and his grandson, Cameron Alexander Wood.
Larry's life will be celebrated and remembered for his contributions to his community and his spirited enthusiasm for life on Friday, March 28, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with Pastor Brandon Read officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the US Navy Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Thursday, March 27, 2025 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
