Obituary of Jerry Sylvester Butler
Jerry Sylvester Butler, a beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather, passed away on February 20, 2024, at the age of 86. He was born on June 9, 1937, in Rockingham, North Carolina, to Marion Butler and MaeBelle Hobbs Butler. Jerry was the devoted husband of Bonnie J. Presley Butler, and together they shared a life filled with love and cherished moments. He served his country with honor in the United States Marines and later enjoyed a fulfilling career as a salesman for Terry Volkswagen Subaru. A faithful member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, Jerry found solace and strength in his faith. He was a man of many passions, including gardening, fishing, cheering for NASCAR, and following UNC Basketball. These interests brought him joy and created lasting memories with family and friends. Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie, and his children: Jeff Butler (Meredith), Craig Butler (Cassie), Tim Weeks (Lara), Danny Weeks, and Heather Hankinson. He is also survived by his sisters, Geraldine Sisk and Kay Eves (Ken). Jerry's legacy extends to his grandchildren: Melanie Glass (Nathan), Cortney Dickerson (Norman), Lauren Barber (Mason), Cole Butler, Cody Butler, Brandon Butler, Mason Hankinson, as well as four great-grandchildren. A memorial service to celebrate Jerry's life will be held at Gethsemane Baptist Church, 411 Blue Ridge Street, Lynchburg, Virginia, on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 4 pm. Following the service, a visitation will be held to allow friends and family to share memories and support one another. Pastor Carlton Duck will officiate the memorial service, guiding attendees through a time of reflection and remembrance. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Gethsemane Baptist Church, a place that held a special meaning in Jerry's heart.
