Born on March 3, 1923 in Amherst County, he was the son of the late Paul Eugene Mays and Ada Massie Mays.
He was a long-time member of Whites United Methodist Church. James worked a number of years for Lynchburg Coca Cola Bottling Company and retired from Kmart Corporation in Lynchburg. He was an avid sports enthusiast and enjoyed many years of participation in Lynchburg Parks and Rec. senior sports programs.
In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by a grandson, Cameron Owen Mays.
He is survived by his son, Stephen Edward Mays and wife Karen of Myrtle Beach, SC; one grandson, Dustin Mays of Appomattox; sister, Dorothy Mays Perrow and husband Paul; and brother, Eugene P. Mays and wife Helen; and his loving dog, Toby.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:30 am on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with Pastor Jack Davis officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Monday, April 27, 2015 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
