Born in Lynchburg, January 11, 1934 he was the son of the late James Gus Austin and Ethel Tolley Bowers.
James was retired vice president of Delta Star and proudly served his country in the US Navy. James was a man of many notable qualities and interests that defined his life. Foremost among these was his fervent love for football, and he had a special place in his heart for the Washington Redskins, his favorite team. When he wasn't immersed in the world of football, he could often be found on the golf course, honing his skills, or partaking in league bowling with his beloved wife. Beyond these, he found solace and enjoyment in the tranquility of his favorite vacation spots, which included the sun-kissed shores of Myrtle Beach and the scenic beauty of Nags Head. It was at these destinations that he truly unwound, with a particular fondness for pier fishing, a pastime that allowed him to connect with the serenity of the coastal environment and reflect on life's simple pleasures. James's diverse interests and the warmth he brought to his family will be cherished forever.
He is survived by two sisters, Irene Creasy of Winnfield, LA and Marie Ramsey of Richmond; his two beloved faithful companions, Rico and Buddy and a number of nieces and nephews.
A service celebrating his life will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 27, 2023 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with the Rev. Roger Roller officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 26, 2023 at the funeral home.
