Born May 1, 1929, in Bedford Co., he was a son of the late Benjamin Davis Rice and Sally Sligh Rice. He was also preceded in death by a son, Richard Preston “Pete” Rice.
Mr. Rice was retired from his logging business, H.D. Rice and Son. He was a member of Cove United Methodist Church.
Survivors also include three sons, Curry Rice and wife Donna, of Coleman Falls, Claude “Boo” Rice and wife Sharon, of Monroe, and Ricky Rice and wife Karen, of Madison; two brothers, Roger Rice and wife Rosalita, of Coleman Falls, and Ryland Rice and wife Sam, of Evington; two sisters, Ann R. White, of Coleman Falls, and Katherine R. Brown and husband Worth, of Baltimore, MD; 7 grandchildren, Amanda, Brandon, and Dakota Rice, “his gardening buddy”, Ritchie Rice and fiancée Chasity, Wayne Rice and wife Samantha, Ben and Christina Rice; 8 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews; including a special niece, Sheila Coleman; and special nephew, J.D. Vest, and his loyal companion, Duke.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 6-8:00 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, and at other times at the residence of Mr. Herbert Rice Sr.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 11, 2011, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, by the Rev. Bill Evans. Interment will follow in Hunting Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
