Eva Mae DeJarnette Stone, beloved mother, grandmother and friend died on February 25, 2025, at the age of 100. She was born April 11, 1924 in Halifax County, Virginia, the daughter of Gordon Charles DeJarnette and Mattie Williams Francis DeJarnette.
Eva graduated from Volens High School in 1941 and moved to Lynchburg that same year to attend Phillips Business College. She lived at the YWCA where she met her lifelong friend Polly Hutchins, née Holdren. After completing her studies, Eva worked in Washington, DC at the Naval Observatory.
Eva married Russell Livingston Stone of Long Island, Virginia on January 20, 1945. They made their home in Lynchburg and were loving parents to their three children. Eva was employed by General Electric Corporation for 28 years, retiring in 1985. After retirement Eva worked at the election polls in Lynchburg; and she and Russell enjoyed attending World War II reunions held by the First Division and 26th Infantry. They were also active in the Central Virginia Chapter of the American Ex-Prisoners of War. Russell died in 1993.
Eva enjoyed traveling and visited many places in Europe, Canada, and the United States.
Eva moved to The Williams Home in 1999. She enjoyed living at The Williams Home and made many friends during the 23 years she was there. She loved playing bridge and Bible trivia; and she volunteered in the residents’ store, Wilmart. In 2022, Eva moved to Tallahassee, Florida to be near her daughter, Nancy.
Eva was a Christian. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Lynchburg. She loved Jesus and her family and friends. She was sharp and witty and made friends wherever she went. She will be missed by all who know and love her.
Eva was predeceased by her parents; her husband; her brother, Hunter DeJarnette; her sisters, Eunice DeJarnette and Ruby DeJarnette Moon; her daughter Sandra Stone Whitehead; and sons-in-law Paul Whitehead, Jr. and Landon Ross. She is survived by her son, Russell L. Stone, Jr. (Susan) of Newberg, OR; daughter, Nancy Ross of Tallahassee, FL; grandchildren Virgilia Bryant of Falmouth, ME; Gregory Stone (Rayanne) of Ponte Vedra, FL; Paul Whitehead, III of Lovingston, VA; Phillip Stone (Sud) of Livingston, NJ; Mark Stone (Kara) of Sherwood, OR; Robert Whitehead (Melissa) of Richmond, VA; Mary Turner of San Antonio, TX; Michael Turner (Catalina) of Dothan, AL; Timmonds Ross of Havana, FL; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Service will be held at Whitten’s Timberlake Chapel at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 7, 2025 followed by interment at Fort Hill Memorial Park, Lynchburg. Family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 10:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Eva’s memory may be made to the American Lung Association or a charity of your choice.
