Elsie "Liz" Elizabeth Downey

Our beloved mother, Elizabeth (Liz) Downey, 89, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 27, 2024. She was born on September 5, 1934 in Wythe County, daughter of the late John and Elsie Viars. Liz was a wonderful mother to her two children, Curtis and Brenda. Family was everything to her. She loved having everyone at her home over the holidays, where she enjoyed cooking everyone’s favorites. She made the best mac and cheese and special desserts for all the grandchildren. Liz worked for many years at C&P Telephone. She loved all the ladies she worked with and kept in touch with them over the years. Her job took her to Richmond for a while, where she learned to drive for the first time. She was an old hand at it in no time. Liz was preceded in death by her loving husband, Carroll Downey and her four brothers. Left to cherish her memory are her son Curtis and wife Sherrie; her daughter, Brenda and fiancée Kenny; a sister, Emma Viars Burnett; five grandchildren, Jenny and husband Kendall, Carrie Beth and husband James, Kimberly, Christopher and Hannah; six great grandchildren. Brennan, Tanner, Shelby, Jamie, Liam and Payton. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 5, 2024 at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
